This simple homemade honey granola recipe takes only 4 basic ingredients and a little bit of time. This granola has those perfect clusters which are just right for sprinkling on a bowl of yogurt or simply eating with some milk.
Homemade Granola with Honey
This granola is about as simple and basic as it gets. Just oats, oil, honey, and a pinch of salt. This recipe for homemade granola is made without nuts and without maple syrup. Of course, there isn’t anything wrong with maple syrup or nuts, but sometimes it’s nice to just have a basic granola that can go with anything!
In fact, this is by far the most common granola for me to make. For some reason, throwing in extra ingredients just doesn’t seem worth the effort most days.. After all, this granola is delicious just the way it is! One of my favorite ways to enjoy this simple honey granola is as a cereal with milk. Oftentimes I’ll add in a spoonful of almond butter as well — yum!
If you’re looking for something with maple syrup, try this recipe!
Granola with clusters
Homemade granola with clusters can be hard to achieve. In fact, for a long time, I had nearly given up on attaining those delicious golden clusters of granola. I was always left with granola that just fell apart completely.
I tried making granola many different ways, each time increasing the honey or increasing the oil or baking it at a lower temperature.. Finally, after many many attempts and several batches of granola completely destroyed (don’t ask), I’ve at last discovered the secret for getting those delicious clusters of granola every time!
It starts with having the proper proportion of honey, oil, and oats. You want to have enough to coat all of the oats properly, but not too much so that the granola doesn’t properly dry out and get crunchy in the oven.
Next, it’s about the method of baking. The granola should be stirred only once in the middle of baking, and after that stir, the granola should be pressed down firmly onto the baking sheet so that it will bake stuck together.
Lastly, you must refrain from stirring or breaking up the granola until it is completely cooled. Once the granola has cooled completely on the baking sheet, you can then break it into clusters and move it into an airtight container for storage. Voila!
Homemade Granola for Cereal
I like this homemade granola recipe as a cold cereal in the mornings. It has lots of clusters and a good crunch which make it so very satisfying to enjoy with some cold milk in the morning — or as a bedtime snack.
This recipe is so versatile that you can sprinkle on whatever toppings that you feel like that particular day. This is especially helpful if you have picky children. You could choose to sprinkle on nuts, coconut, dried fruit, fresh fruit, chocolate chips, almond butter, or just serve it plain!
My go-to bedtime snack the last couple weeks has been homemade honey granola with whole milk and a big spoonful of almond butter.. yum.
How to store homemade granola
Homemade granola is so easy to store and can last a good amount of time in your pantry. Store your homemade honey granola in an airtight container or ziplock bag.
If you make sure your granola is completely cooled and dry before storing, it can last in your pantry for several weeks! (I doubt it will last that long.)
I like to have a batch of granola in the pantry at all times. It’s so easy to whip up and keep on hand.
Homemade Granola vs Store-bought Granola
If you’re wanting to make more foods from scratch instead of buying them from the grocery store, granola is probably the #1 food to make! Here are a couple reasons why:
- It truly tastes just as good – if not better- than the stuff from the grocery store.
- You know exactly what’s in there. No strange ingredients!
- Its WAY CHEAPER than store-bought granola
- 100% customizable! You can put whatever you want in there, depending on what you have on hand.
- It’s a great homemade gift! Put some in a pretty jar with a bow, and maybe include a recipe card.. done! And your friends will be so impressed!
Ingredients
7 Cups Rolled Oats
3/4 Cup Coconut Oil
3/4 Cup Honey
1/4 tsp. Salt
How to Make Honey Granola
Preheat your oven to 300 degrees and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
First melt your coconut oil. You can do this in a large bowl in the microwave or in a small sauce pan.
Mix the honey and salt into the melted coconut oil until combined.
In a large bowl, mix the rolled oats, melted coconut oil, honey, and salt.
Spread the oat mixture evenly onto the baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake for 25 minutes.
Remove from the oven and stir thoroughly, then press down the oat mixture onto the baking sheet. I like to use the back of a measuring cup.
Return to the oven and bake for another 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown
Remove from the oven and allow to cool completely before breaking into clusters and storing in an airtight container.
Notes
Store granola in an airtight container for up to 3 weeks.
