This simple homemade apple sauce recipe is as delicious as it is easy. This apple sauce recipe uses an immersion blender which makes it come together so quickly, and it tastes even better than store-bought apple sauce!
With fall rounding the corner, apples are fixing to show up in abundance in every grocery store produce section. If you’ve found yourself with way to many apples, there is no better way to use them than by making a big batch of homemade apple sauce! Apple sauce is great for school lunches and is such an easy and nutritious snack for any time of the day.
Eating raw apples is nice on occasion, but I’ll usually reach for another type of fruit before I want to eat a whole raw apple. Mixing things up on occasion by cooking the apples and making them into apple pie, cobbler, apple sauce, or apple butter is such a great way to use up a large amount of apples at once!
What apples are best for making apple sauce?
That depends on what you want your applesauce to be like! Some apples are sweeter, while others are more tart. Thankfully, apple sauce is very forgiving and it doesn’t matter too much what type of apples you use. Using a couple different varieties of apples is also perfectly acceptable, and can help you achieve the perfect balance of tartness and sweetness.
If you prefer a very sweeter apple sauce, you’ll want to pick nice sweet apples such as honeycrisp, gala, or pink lady apples. If you want to add tartness to your applesauce, feel free to throw in a few Granny Smith apples!
What I wouldn’t recommend is choosing to do entirely Granny Smith apples, unless you like your applesauce very tart.
Simple Homemade Apple Sauce
Making apple sauce is SO incredibly easy. I was shocked the first time I tried it at how quickly it came together! The most difficult part of making this simple homemade apple sauce is the peeling, coring, and chopping of the apples… and to tell you the truth, I’ve made apple sauce without peeling the apples before and it turned out just fine — although it had a less smooth texture. You could also use an apple peeler and corer which would certainly save you lots of time.
Another thing that makes this apple sauce super simple to make is the use of an immersion blender. Immersion blenders are so helpful when it comes to making things like homemade mayo, butternut squash soup, and so many other recipes! Instead of having to load batches of hot apple chunks into a blender and get more dishes dirty, you can just whip out your handy immersion blender and do it straight in the pot! This tool makes it actually worth it for me to make applesauce on a regular basis.
This simple recipe uses only 2 ingredients. The lemon juice is essential in this recipe because it gives the sauce a wonderful flavor and it keeps the apples from turning brown.
How to store homemade apple sauce
Keep homemade apple sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.
You can also keep apple sauce in the freezer to pull out whenever you want it! Just make sure to leave a bit of space at the top of your container so that the applesauce can expand slightly when it freezes. Apple sauce will stay fresh in the freezer for 6 months.
A very convenient way to store apple sauce is to use individual serving sized containers. Store them in the refrigerator or freezer so that you can just throw one into a lunch box or grab one for a snack any time of the day!
