This perfect homemade whipped cream recipe is exactly what you need to take your sweet treat to the next level. Being not too sweet, and having just a hint of vanilla makes this whipped cream pair well with just about anything!
Whipped cream is a weakness of mine.
When I was younger, I was more accustomed to the whipped cream that comes in an aerosol can, and I loved the stuff. I couldn’t be trusted to gauge my own portions of whipped cream for a long, long time.. If I had been given the choice of whether to eat my dessert or just have a big bowl of whipped cream, I would have chosen whipped cream every time!
I also was a huge fan of cool whip, the stuff that technically doesn’t even have any cream.. I never would have guessed when I was younger of course, nor would I have cared. It was delicious! Because I loved fluffy, sweet, creamy “whipped cream” items so much, some of my birthday desserts were chosen based upon around whether or not they could be topped with copious amounts of whipped cream. Angel food cake was a common pick.
It wasn’t until I was much older when I discovered the wonders of homemade whipped cream. The flavor was unbelievable; the texture was thicker, creamier, and more decadent; and it was SO easy to make! I was amazed! I could have fresh, homemade whipped cream on the table in 5 minutes or less, and we didn’t even have to use any special ingredients or equipment. All it takes is a bowl, a hand mixer, and a couple pantry staples.

Can homemade whipped cream be made ahead?
Homemade whipped cream can be made a little bit ahead, but keep in mind that the whipped cream will become less stiff and more loose as time goes on. When making homemade whipped cream ahead of time, you should have your mixing bowl chilled and the heavy cream should be very cool before you even start whipping. Storing the already chilled bowl with whipped cream in the refrigerator will help the whipped cream stay firm and fluffy for longer.
If you’re making homemade whipped cream for a party or are having guests over, I would recommend at least making the homemade whipped cream the same day you plan on using it. If you make sure the whipped cream remains cold, you shouldn’t have any trouble making it a several hours in advance.
For best results, I highly recommend making homemade whipped cream within an hour or two of serving. Be sure to store your whipped cream in the refrigerator, covered, immediately after whipping it up to keep it from becoming less thick and fluffy. I usually either make the whipped cream just before we’re ready to serve breakfast or dessert, or I will make it a few hours before hand and immediately store it in the refrigerator until we’re ready to use it. It will keep up its fluffy, firm texture for at least a few hours in the refrigerator.
After a couple days in the refrigerator, although it will have lost a lot of it’s firmness and fluffiness, the whipped cream will still taste amazing and can be used in things like your morning coffee!
Can you freeze homemade whipped cream?
Not really. Frozen whipped cream will lose it’s fluffy, creamy texture and will deflate when thawed. I have put leftover homemade whipped cream into the freezer and eaten it later as an ice-cream like dessert, which is delicious!
How to Store Homemade Whipped Cream
To store leftover whipped cream, keep it in an airtight container in the refrigerator. The whipped cream will become less thick and fluffy after the first day or two of making it, but will still taste delicious. The longer your whipped cream was left at room temperature during serving will greatly determine how firm the texture will be the next day. If the whipped cream was left out at room temperature for an hour or two, you can expect to have a slightly melted whipped cream the next day.
To store whipped cream that was made ahead of time, keep it in an airtight container in the refrigerator. For best results, make sure the whipped cream is placed immediately into a chilled container before storing it in the refrigerator. This will help keep it from loosing that fluffy texture and becoming watery. The colder you can keep the whipped cream without freezing it, the better!
Ingredients
1 Cup Heavy Whipping Cream
1/4 Cup Powdered Sugar
How to make whipped cream
If you would like, you can begin by chilling your mixing bowl in the refrigerator for 30 minutes before beginning, which will help you achieve a firm whipped cream. This step is optional.
In a medium sized mixing bowl, combine the cold heavy whipping cream with 1/4 cup powdered sugar.
Using a hand mixer, beat the heavy cream and the powdered sugar on medium-high speed for about 2 minutes, or until soft peaks form. Once the soft peaks form, continue to whip your heavy cream, stopping about every 15-20 seconds to check the consistency. Be cautious at this point to avoid over-beating.
When you lift up the beaters and find the peaks left behind to be stiff and pointy, and not droopy, then you know you’re there.
Serve immediately and enjoy!
Notes
If not using immediately, store in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Whipped cream will only hold its thick consistency for a couple of hours, so try to use it fairly soon after it has been whipped.
