Mashed sweet potatoes are the perfect holiday side dish. Light, fluffy, and perfectly sweet and buttery. These potatoes are sure to be a favorite at your next holiday dinner.
I don’t know why I never think of making mashed sweet potatoes… we love sweet potatoes, and have them often. In fact, it’s always a bit of an inconvenience to put butter and salt on every slice of roasted sweet potato right before you eat it. Why not just mash it all together before hand?
Not only does mashing the sweet potatoes help you get the ratio of salt, butter, and sweet potato just right every time, but it makes for an extra special side dish that’s perfect to go along with steak, ham, turkey, or whatever else you have on hand!
I was amazed at how simple it was to make these potatoes, and I was also amazed at how delicious light, fluffy sweet potatoes are! Give this recipe a try and let me know what you think!
Somehow it seems like mashed sweet potatoes take a backseat to regular mashed potatoes in most situations, but maybe they shouldn’t! Sweet potatoes are the perfect addition to any holiday spread.
It’s always nice to have a subtly sweet side dish alongside all of the savory things. Sweet potatoes are similar to cranberry sauce in this one way, they add a little sweetness! I, for one, love to have some variety on my thanksgiving plate.
Actually, I see nothing wrong with having both types of mashed potatoes on my Thanksgiving plate!
Mashed sweet potatoes are also said to be a healthier option than regular potatoes. Although I’m not sure that matters very much on Thanksgiving or Christmas, it can’t hurt to have healthier options so long as they’re delicious!
I may not be convinced that sweet potatoes are healthier than regular potatoes (all potatoes are my friend), I do know that mashed sweet potatoes are a delicious and metabolically supportive side dish.
Anytime you have sweet potatoes, it’s a good idea to put a good amount of butter on there to help balance your blood sugar and boost your metabolism, so it’s certainly just as good to have your sweet potatoes pre-mashed with some good salt, butter, and maybe a little maple syrup.
I make these mashed sweet potatoes without a potato masher. I like to use a hand mixer because it makes very fluffy, smooth sweet potatoes without lumps. It’s also very quick and easy!
If you prefer your mashed sweet potatoes with a slightly chunkier texture, feel free to use a potato masher.

- Add the softened butter, milk, maple syrup, and salt.
- Mix with a hand mixture for 1-3 minutes, or until very light, fluffy, and smooth.

Notes
You can also peel your sweet potatoes before you cook them, but I find that the peel is super easy to remove when the potatoes are already cooked and have cooled just a bit.
